NBA training camps open on September 29, and yet, the Golden State Warriors remain the only team in the NBA not to have added any new faces to their roster. It’s been heavily reported that multiple veteran free agents are waiting for the Warriors to resolve Jonathan Kuminga’s restricted free agency before inking their own deals. Al Horford, De’Anthony Melton, Gary Payton II, and potentially Seth Curry are all waiting in the wings.

Unfortunately, until that quartet signs on the dotted line, they’re unable to participate in any unofficial workouts at the team’s practice facility. Furthermore, their opportunity to get situated in the Bay Area and prepare for training camp is being significantly hindered. NBC Sports Bay Area’s Dalton Johnson discussed this issue during a recent episode of the “Dubs Talk” podcast.

“They have it theoretically—you know the nine guys, you know who the others are—but they’re not in camp right now,” Poole noted. “They can’t be part of the offseason workout program that’s going on at the training center.”

The Warriors are fortunate that the veteran quartet has remained patient. They could have sought out similar deals elsewhere in the NBA at any point this summer. Therefore, their looming presence is another reason why Golden State must continue searching for a resolution over the current Kuminga situation.

Sooner or later, the Warriors will welcome a new group of players to the roster. All of the incoming talent should help improve Steve Kerr’s rotation and help build toward a contending-level team. However, until the Kuminga situation is resolved, the Warriors will struggle to focus on the upcoming season, and that’s where the bigger problem lies.
