Ever since Paolo Torre’s revelations about Kawhi Leonard, the two-time Finals MVP has found himself increasingly surrounded by reports that highlight the chaos and irrationality of his off-court behavior rather than the quiet brilliance he showed on the court.
Recent reports of him being allegedly compelled to earn $28 million for a “no-show job” with the Clippers are already frustrating many. One of them is NBA analyst Brendan Harper, who expressed sharp criticism of Kawhi and his uncle Dennis Robertson, particularly over their audacity in asking for part ownership from the Los Angeles Lakers as a condition for signing him in 2019.

NBA analyst ridicules Kawhi and his camp
When Leonard led the Toronto Raptors to their first-ever championship in 2019, he instantly became the most sought-after free agent in the league. Put simply, his stock couldn’t have been higher after he showed his ability to lead a franchise to a silverware against all odds.
Thus, unsurprisingly, a bidding war ensued between teams hoping to lure him. So, while the Purple and Gold, who were already looking for another partner alongside LeBron James, were also in that race, the negotiations with them took a turn.

Allegedly, Kawhi’s advisor and uncle, Dennis, presented the Lakers with a series of ambitious demands that extended far beyond a standard max contract. These demands reportedly included part ownership of the franchise, access to a private plane and guaranteed off-court endorsement income.
For Harper, these requests bordered on delusional. Approaching one of the most successful franchises in NBA history with demands of this magnitude, he argued, was not only unrealistic but also disrespectful to the league’s culture.

“There is no team on this Earth or any other planet who would come close to giving Kawhi Leonard that. And the one team we know for damn sure that wouldn’t even give a third of this is the Los Angeles Lakers,” Harper said. “Damn what the Clippers would do, damn what Steve Ballmer would do, the Lakers? The Purple and Gold? Man, you must be on dog food.”
Leonard’s reputation is getting tarnished
Before these revelations gained renewed attention, Leonard’s public image had largely been that of a player obsessed with his game. Despite persistent injury struggles, he was regarded as one of the most low-maintenance stars in the league — someone who let his game speak for itself while keeping his private life tightly guarded.

However, these new and resurfaced reports have begun to erode that perception, painting Leonard and his camp in a far different light. It is worth noting that such stories are not entirely new. As far back as 2019, Sam Amick of The Athletic had already reported Kawhi’s unusual demands with franchises like the Lakers, Clippers and Raptors.
At that time, these allegations were not taken as seriously. Still, with Kawhi in hot water due to his linkage with Aspiration, it seems like all questionable antics from his camp are coming under the spotlight one after the other.
