There has been a lot of talk about Kentucky’s backcourt headed into the basketball season, and for good reason.
The Cats return Otega Oweh, who is expected to be one of the top players in the SEC this season. They also brought in All-ACC point guard Jaland Lowe from Pittsburgh and Denzel Aberdeen, a key piece from last year’s Florida team that won the national championship. That’s not to mention the addition of a top-25 freshman in Jasper Johnson.
Much of this frontcourt’s potential depends on Jayden Quaintance, and understandably so. Quaintance is the key piece for this group and has the potential to be one of the best big men in the country.
But Kentucky’s frontcourt also will have a junior Brandon Garrison, who now has a year of experience playing under Mark Pope. Garrison showed some really good potential last year, and if he can build off that, he could be a major piece for this Wildcats squad.
Freshman Malachi Moreno will play a key role early as Quaintance gets back to full health, and has impressed in offseason practices. Mo Dioubate has SEC experience and should be one of the best defenders in the conference. If he continues to improve his offensive game, look out.
Then there’s maybe the most intriguing player in the frontcourt, Andrija Jelavic. The Croatian big man may be the biggest unknown on the team. He’s 21 years old with professional experience overseas, but how will he adjust in the U.S.?
There are multiple interesting pieces in the frontcourt equation for the Wildcats. If they live up to their potential, Kentucky could have one of the best frontcourts in the country.
