The Brooklyn Nets have just a few days left before training camp begins and the team will get to see what kind of team will be taking the floor. Brooklyn will still have to make some tough decisions when it comes to deciding which players to cut, but they are still thinking of ways to take care of the salary cap before the regular season comes around.

The Nets announced on Sunday that they have waived guard Yuri Collins one game after signing the former Golden State Warriors guard to a contract guaranteeing him $85,300. Brooklyn has enough players vying for playing time at point guard, especially after the trade acquisition of guard Kobe Bufkin, so it seems like Collins wasn’t signed with the intent of competing for a spot in training camp.

As Spotrac’s Keith Smith pointed out on X, the Nets did to Collins the same thing that they did to center David Muoka and guard/forward Dre Davis in which they signed those players just to waive them. The reason for the Nets employing this strategy is so they don’t have to worry about going out of their way to meet the salary floor after having to cut their roster down to 18 players (15 standard, 3 Two-Way).

Collins, 24, went undrafted in the 2023 NBA Draft and since then, he has spent his time as part of the Golden State Warriors organization, mostly with their G League afiliate, the Santa Cruz Warriors. Collins got his first taste of NBA action during the 2024-25 season when he played in two games for Golden State and averaged 1.0 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game while shooting 33.3% from the field.

Collins spent most of his time last season in the G League for Santa Cruz, averaging 13.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 10.0 assists per game while shooting 41.4% from the floor and 26.7% from deep. As of this writing, Brooklyn has 20 players under contract, not including the reported signings of forwards Grant Nelson, Ricky Council IV, and Fanbo Zeng.
