Karl-Anthony Towns began his NBA journey with the Minnesota Timberwolves after being drafted No. 1 overall in 2015. Along with his arrival came a nickname, “Big Purr,” that Towns has openly disliked ever since. Even after the Timberwolves traded him to the New York Knicks last offseason, the change of scenery did little to warm him up to the name.
Towns recently appeared on NBC’s late-night show “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” On the show, host Jimmy Fallon brought up the nickname. Towns reiterated his feelings bluntly. He shared once again that he is not a fan of “Big Purr” and never embraced it.
Over the years, Karl Anthony-Towns has collected various nicknames. The most enduring and well-known has been KAT. Last season, his Knicks teammate Josh Hart playfully added more options to the list, dubbing him The Big Bodega, The Big Kat, Kit Kat, and even The Big Meow.

Recently, in an interview with Games Hub reporter D.J. Siddiqi, Jalen Brunson heaped high praise on Towns. Brunson hailed his teammate’s impact since joining the Knicks.
“On the court, he’s been great. The things that he’s been able to do in a short period of time being a Knick has been amazing. Having him as a teammate has been really fun. I think that gets overlooked how good of a teammate he is. Obviously, he’s a great player and what he does on the court. But the teammate he is and what he brings to the locker room for us is special. So I’m really happy to have him,” Brunson said.
In his first season, Karl-Anthony Towns led the Knicks to the Eastern Conference semifinals but lost against the Indiana Pacers. Yet, optimism remains high. Reporter Brett Siegel suggested that the upcoming season might finally be the one where the Knicks win the Eastern Conference crown.
