Former Sacramento Kings star Mike Bibby officially took the helm as the new Sacramento State men’s basketball coach on Monday as he held the team’s first practice. Bibby’s new reign as the head coach comes with a lot of change, with an entirely new coaching staff and 14 new players on the roster. Of the 14 new players, 10 are Division I transfers. The Hornets are one of only eight programs in the country with no returning players from a year ago. Bibby hopes to turn the program around because the last time the Hornets had a winning season was the 2019-2020 season, when the team finished 16-14 overall.Beyond coaching staff and roster changes, Bibby is also having the team practice five days a week. “We got a target on our back, and we’ve got to go out there and prepare ourselves,” Bibby told KCRA 3. Bibby is hoping the team fuels fan excitement around the program, and anticipates packed games.”It’s going to be fun, you know, we’re going to try to get everybody out to these games. Change the culture here, put it to a winning culture, and just try to change the mindset of Sacramento State,” Bibby said.Sac State will kick off the season at home on Nov. 4 against Dominican.See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app | Subscribe to our morning newsletter | Find us on YouTube here and subscribe to our channel
