The Phoenix Suns are turning to one of their greatest icons to help shape the franchise’s future, and it’s a sweet welcome back home for a two-time MVP of the NBA.
Basketball Hall of Famer and Phoenix’s beloved Steve Nash is returning to the organization as a senior adviser, owner Mat Ishbia announced on Monday.
“Steve Nash was an amazing player and exactly what the Phoenix Suns are all about,” Ishbia wrote on social media. “His grit, toughness, and winning mentality have defined our organization in the past, and I’m so excited to share that Steve is formally joining the Suns as a senior advisor and will help us define our future for years to come!”
A Legacy in Phoenix
Nash, now 51, cemented his place in Suns history during two memorable stints with the team, most notably from 2004 to 2012.
Renowned for his dazzling playmaking and elite shooting, Nash won back-to-back NBA MVP awards in 2005 and 2006, becoming the face of Phoenix’s high-octane offense under coach Mike D’Antoni.
He retired as one of the game’s greatest point guards, with eight All-Star appearances and induction into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.
From Coach to Adviser
Following his playing career, Nash turned to coaching, leading the Brooklyn Nets from 2020 to 2022. In just over two seasons, he compiled a 94-67 record, but his tenure ended abruptly after a 2-5 start to the 2022 campaign.
Despite the mixed results, Nash gained valuable front-office and sideline experience that now informs his advisory role in Phoenix.
A Rebuilding Suns Team
The Suns are coming off a disappointing 36-46 season that fell far short of expectations. The offseason brought sweeping changes, including trading superstar Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets and buying out Bradley Beal’s contract.
With the roster in transition, Ishbia and the front office are betting that Nash’s insight, experience, and deep ties to the franchise can guide Phoenix back to contention.
