PROVO, Utah – Timpview High forward Will Openshaw has committed to BYU basketball.

The 6-foot-10 Openshaw announced his commitment to BYU on Tuesday night. He’s the second commitment to BYU’s 2026 recruiting class.

Openshaw, a Third Team All-State selection last year, picked BYU over offers from Utah Valley, Stanford, and others.

BYU Basketball lands Will Openshaw

“The thing that made them stand out among the rest of the other schools that I was getting recruited by, … I felt like it was the best opportunity and best place to further develop my game and just kind of better my future when it comes to my basketball career,” Will Openshaw said to KSL Sports.

BYU jumped into the mix for Openshaw earlier this month when they extended an offer to him. Shortly after the offer, he was on a visit during the weekend of BYU football’s home game against the Stanford Cardinal.

“The thing that was really intriguing was that I felt like their system and where they wanted to get me was specifically tailored for me, and it was a system that I would fit in,” Openshaw said.

“They envision me, obviously, having a role on their team and just running the pick-and-pop, pick-and-roll, being able to stretch the floor a little bit more, find guys and just help expand and stretch the floor a little bit more.”

Openshaw plans to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints before enrolling at BYU for the 2028-29 season.

The big man noted that BYU, a faith-based institution sponsored by the Church, was supportive of him going on the mission before enrolling.

“So the mission thing, there are lots of different, mixed opinions about it. I had some schools tell me they weren’t a big fan of it. There were some that heavily encouraged it, and then there were some that were pretty neutral,” said Openshaw. “BYU was one that encouraged it, because, from a basketball perspective, it gives your body time to develop and grow a little bit more, which is something they thought I would need.”

Openshaw joins his high school and AAU teammate, Dean Rueckert, with the Utah Prospects in BYU’s 2026 recruiting class.

The two future Cougs have big goals for their final year at Timpview.

“A big focus for our team this year is winning the state championship. It’s something we’ve been trying to do for the past couple of years. We definitely know we have the team to do it.”

Last season, Openshaw averaged 11.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, according to the Deseret News’ stats.

The early period for 2026 recruits begins on November 12 and runs until November 19, 2025.
