Even before the offseason began, Kevin Durant made headlines by joining the Houston Rockets through a historic seven-team trade. After spending two and a half seasons with the Phoenix Suns, Durant is now poised to embark on a new chapter in Houston.
This move signals an opportunity for Durant to redefine his role on a team with a rising core. Speaking with Sports Illustrated, NBA insider Chris Mannix shared insights into Durant’s perspective on fitting with the Rockets. Mannix also highlighted how Durant’s presence could elevate the performance of his teammates.
“I talked a little bit to Kevin as well about how he sees himself fitting. He doesn’t speak in the short term. He is about to be 37, but this is a guy that is going to play until the wheels fall off. That very easily could be an all-star into his 40s. We’ve still seen a guy that can shoot the three at high level, who can hit that corner, operate as a hub at the top of the key,” Mannix said.
“If Amen Thompson could just be a credible three-point shooter, like mid-low to mid-30s, he’s going to see an offensive jump. Like, all these guys are going to benefit so greatly from having Kevin Durant around. And I can tell from talking to a few of them, like,” he added.
Fred VanVleet Injury Sparks Rumors Of Russell Westbrook Joining Kevin Durant In HoustonKevin Durant (Image Credits: Imagn)
Recent reports revealed that Rockets star Fred VanVleet could miss the entire upcoming season due to an ACL tear. In response, Andrew Peters of Bleacher Report suggested that Houston consider bringing back Russell Westbrook to support Durant.
“The Rockets could bring Westbrook back to Houston and either grant him the starting job or allow Reed Sheppard to assume that role while having a reliable backup. Not to mention, signing with the Rockets would give Westbrook and Durant another chance to go for a championship,” the report read.
Houston boasts a young and promising core. Durant has already started sending motivational messages to the team’s rising stars. Despite this, the Rockets will need to seriously consider signing a backup for VanVleet to ensure Durant has the supporting cast necessary for a competitive run.
