It was a surprise to most fans of the association that the Dallas Mavericks won the NBA Draft Lottery. While many were taken aback by the outcome, a lot of players were disheartened. Texas Longhorns legend and Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant was among this group of people.
Kevin Durant is known for his blunt takes on the internet. The former Texas star always airs out whatever runs through his head, and people tend to listen to them. So, it made sense that a lot of fans reacted when Durant made his opinions known when the Mavericks won the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery.

True enough, there were a lot of teams jockeying for the rights to select Cooper Flagg. The Washington Wizards and Utah Jazz, for instance, had the biggest chances of landing the Duke Blue Devils star before the NBA Draft Lottery started.
All of those dreams about making Flagg their franchise cornerstone quickly disappeared once it was made known that the Mavericks were picking first in the draft.
Squads trade away their aging stars and separate their stars through the trade deadline or let them go in free agency. All of that eventually comes to no avail whenever the NBA Draft Lottery does not go their way. While this is a clear attempt at parity, it’s very easy for fans and even stars to think that everything is rigged to keep some famous franchises afloat.
