Tre Johnson hasn’t been around the Washington Wizards for very long, but the sixth pick in the 2025 NBA draft is already impressing those within the organization.

Johnson was the SEC Freshman of the Year last season at Texas, averaging 19.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 33 games on 39.7% shooting from 3-point range. He was the 10th player in program history to be honored as Freshman of the Year.

The 19-year-old impressed the Wizards during the predraft process for several reasons, with his work ethic and character being among them. Wizards general manager Will Dawkins is excited to see Johnson take the court this season.

“Tre is someone who is a hooper,” Dawkins said. “He is in the gym. He takes it seriously. He doesn’t have a lot of hobbies; we’re trying to develop other hobbies outside of basketball. He is going to develop on his own just because he puts so much time in, but we’re intentional on what we’re working on. He’ll get opportunities. He’ll get reps. He has already improved at passing the ball; he is already further ahead on that.”

Johnson debuted with the Wizards in the NBA Summer League, averaging 19.5 points, three rebounds, 1.5 assists and one steal on 45.5% shooting from 3-point range in two appearances. He finished off his stay with a 21-point effort on July 13.

The 6-foot-5 guard was highly touted because of his dynamic scoring ability and potential to pull up from all over the court, traits that were on display in a small sample size in Las Vegas. He projects to have the chance to compete for rotation minutes in training camp.

Johnson is among several players the Wizards are building around, including Bub Carrington, Bilal Coulibaly, Kyshawn George, Will Riley and Alexandre Sarr, among others. He’ll have to earn his playing time but the Texas native has the team excited about his potential.

“He’ll be challenged on the defensive end, but we’ll get him reps and opportunity,” Dawkins said. “One thing we know he has is confidence, and one thing we know is he is going to put in time in the gym. It’ll be fully holistic and develop the mental side, the physical side. He has already added 4-5 pounds; I think he is 199 (pounds). He is going to take his bumps and bruises, but we’re excited for Tre.”
