The Miami Heat president, Pat Riley, had a soft corner for Michael Beasley. The No.2 pick in the 2008 NBA draft recently shared his bond with Riley, which indicates a strong, overwhelming connection they had when Beasley joined the Miami Heat.
Beasley’s career in the league did not go as expected. His poor delivery and inconsistency forced him to exit the NBA. Off the court, he was also dealing with a financial scam, but did not hold back from appreciating his supporters in his early days.
“Pat treated me like a son. You know how, like,” Michael Beasley said. “Come on, Dad, don’t kiss me in front of the guys. Dad, I don’t want to talk to you today. But he made me sit in his office every f***ing week, whether I was listening or not. And I live by the morals he taught me.” However, Beasley admitted he was too young and had too much money to understand Riley’s advice at that time truly.
Michael Beasley later regretted ignoring Riley’s advice, especially about money. Riley told him to buy a small condo, but instead, he bought a mansion and invited friends to stay. His lifestyle led to problems, and after just two seasons, he was moved out.

Beasley recently shared how tough his first season with the Miami Heat was. He admitted he used to blame head coach Erik Spoelstra for many things. But later, he realized that it was also Spoelstra’s first year as head coach, and they were adjusting to their role.
“I used to blame Spo a lot. The older I got, the more I realized like my rookie year was his rookie year. And just as scared as I was of Riles, he was just… probably more because he used to be the film guy,” Beasley said on the All The Smoke podcast.
Eventually, Michael Beasley’s career faded from the league, but his over 10 years in the league are still an evergreen memory he cherishes.
