Phoenix Suns rookie Rasheer Fleming was highly touted entering the NBA draft, and the 31st pick is eager to showcase why when called upon this season.

Fleming was voted to the All-Atlantic 10 first team, averaging 14.7 points, 8.5 rebounds, 1.5 blocks, 1.4 steals and 1.3 assists on 39% shooting from 3-point range at St. Joseph’s. He ranked 19th in the country in defensive rebounds and second in the conference in double-doubles.

The 6-foot-9 forward enters training camp this week, aiming to compete for rotation minutes in the frontcourt. His exact role is yet to be determined, but new head coach Jordan Ott has outlined what he’d like to see from him early on.

“One of the things has been always crashing (the glass) because I feel like one of my good attributes (is) I can rebound pretty well,” Fleming said Wednesday. “I think I can focus on that and do well at that. Being able to guard multiple positions at a high level and run the floor well. All of those things, just adding up and doing it.”

The Suns traded the No. 36 pick and two future second-round picks to move up to select Fleming in the draft. He was considered a potential late first-rounder, so when he fell to the second round, the team jumped at the chance to take him early because of his overall ability.

Fleming debuted with the Suns in summer league, averaging 7.3 points, four rebounds and 1.7 steals on 36.4% shooting from the field in three games. He showed each element of his game, from his offensive rebounding to creating turnovers with his 7-foot, 5 1/4-inch wingspan.

The team enters a new era under Ott after trading Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets and making several other roster moves. Fleming believes he aligns well with the team’s vision for the future and is eager to get to work this week in camp.

“I think a lot of our guys are effort-based players,” Fleming said. “We like to show effort and play hard. I think that is what we’re kind of building up to as a team: A fast-paced team that does everything on both ends at a high level. I think that is what we’re here to do.”
