Ever since he was named as part of the new Boston Celtics ownership group, now-minority owner Aditya Mittal has been a bit of a mystery to fans of the team. The CEO of ArcelorMittal, a steel company founded by his father Lakshmi, Mittal has been billed as a fan of the team and an enthusiastic part of the consortium led by private equity magnate Bill Chisholm that bought the team off Wyc and Irv Grousbeck, Boston’s previous majority owners.
But now, Celtics fans have had a proper introduction at the team’s introductory press conference of the3 new ownership group as represented by Chisholm, Mittal, and Wyc Grousbeck, with Mittal speaking to the media in his role as a team owner for the first time this Thursday (Sep. 25) afternoon. “I’m truly excited and very humbled to be here,” began the ArcelorMittal CEO when asked what it meant to him to join the ownership group and the Celtics family.

“As some of you may guess, I was born in India, but I lived in grew up in Indonesia, which is miles away fromBoston, maybe 8,000 miles away,” he continued. “But I had the chance to visit Boston in the late 80s. I went to a game in the old garden. It was magical. I mean, I I fell in love with it.”

“And when I heard from Wyc that he’s thinking of expanding the partnership, I thought it was a phenomenal opportunity,” said Mittal. “As all of you know, Wyc has been a tremendous leader. He’s a phenomenal role model. He really took the Celtics to new heights, and we’re so happy that he’s continuing in this partnership with us. And he introduced me to Bill (Chisholm).”
“I remember having my first conversation with Bill, and we went to the same university. He went to Wharton. I went to Wharton as well, undergrad. And we hit it off, and I knew that this partnership will work. As you heard from Bill and his family, they are fully committed to the Celtics. And we’re so happy to be riding and going on this journey with Bill and his family and the rest of the partnership group. I think all of us will be true to the heritage of the Celtics. It has a very intelligent and smart competitive spirit. A very loyal and passionate fan base, including me, including all of us. And it pursues excellence in everything it does, right?”
“Whether it’s on the court or the organization, as you can see, (President of Basketball Operations) Brad (Stevens) is here, (Celtics president) Rich (Gotham) is here, but also in what it does in terms of its community support, social justice,” recounted Mittal.

“So, I’m just truly excited, humbled and honored to be here and look forward to the season and go get some more banners,” finished the Boston minority owner. And while that might not be a complete biography of his path to becoming part of this ownership group or even a fan of the team, it’s certainly a solid introduction to the fans of the team he now represents.
