Today in Boston Celtics history, the team signed Sylvester Williams to a contract as an unrestricted free agent. A native of New Haven, Connecticut, Sly — as he was often called as a nickname — suited up for the University of Rhode Island, where he would earn consensus second-team All-American honors at the NCAA level.

The Garbage Man (another popular nickname he was known by) was selected with the 21st overall pick of the 1979 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks. He played a total of four seasons with the Knicks before they traded him to the Atlanta Hawks in 1983 for Rudy Macklin and cash considerations. He played two seasons in total for that ball club before being cut by the team on Sept. 23, 1985.

Three days later, he signed with Boston. The New Haven native played six games with Boston before being waived again that December.
