This will be a big season for Austin Reaves.
Those numbers sound reasonable for a player who averaged 20.2 points, 4.5 rebounds and 5.8 assists last year.
However, the last time we saw Reaves play, he stunk it up in the playoffs. He was picked on defensively, struggled offensively and did little to help the Lakers do anything besides end their season quickly.
To be fair to Reaves, he was dealing with a toe sprain. He was also playing some physical wings, and it’s hard to tell if it was his foot or the Wolves’ talent that bothered him most.
Now, it’s a new year with everyone wondering what his ceiling is, if he should get paid more, how much that should be and whether that should be with the Lakers.
According to Lakers head coach JJ Redick during Thursday’s media day presser, Reaves is entering training camp as prepared as possible.
“It’s been a constant comment from our staff [that] every day he’s been in the gym, he’s been the best player in the gym,” Redick said. “Again, this goes back to last May, all summer, his body is really good right now. He’s really strong. His burst, his athleticism, it’s evident that he spent a lot of time working on his body this summer.”
It’s no surprise that Reaves has been the best player in the gym for the Lakers this summer.
So far, Reaves’ trajectory has been an arrow going up. Every season, his production has increased, raising the expectations of what he can accomplish.
While he has yet to plateau, it’s bound to happen at some point. Based on how he’s preparing for the season, though, he’s doing his best to keep pushing his ceiling up and maximizing his talent.
If Reaves balls out this year, any concerns about his upside and his contract will be put to rest expeditiously. The Lakers need him to be, at worst, the third-best player on this team if they are going to have a successful year and a deep postseason run. He’s shown throughout his career that these are realistic targets for him to reach, and that he can potentially do even more.
Right now, it sounds like Reaves has done everything possible to ensure he begins training camp on the right foot and he seems determined to find out just how good he can become.
