Biggest threat to Thunder in West

Picking out the Western Conference teams that pose the biggest threat to the Thunder.

The Oklahoma City Thunder will begin their NBA title defense next month, hosting the first game of the regular season against the Houston Rockets on Oct. 21. However, before that, each team will get a look at their newest players and strategies they’ll deploy during the regular season in their attempts to knock the Thunder off their throne.

The preseason begins on Oct. 2, kicking off with an international showdown in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates between the New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers – two teams that could compete for an Eastern Conference title this year, barring another serious injury to Joel Embiid.

Just one day later, the new-look Phoenix Suns will see how their organization operates post-Kevin Durant when they play the Los Angeles Lakers in the Coachella Valley in Palm Desert, California. Then, Saturday, Oct. 4 will feature three games including two international affairs and a showdown between two of the Western Conference’s final four teams a season ago: the Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves.

The preseason kicks into high gear on Sunday, Oct. 4 as ESPN will televise the matchup between Lakers and Golden State Warriors, scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET (5:30 p.m. PT) at the Chase Center in San Francisco:

The New Orleans Pelicans will play two games against Australian NBL teams in Melbourne Park.

Meanwhile, there will be three more traditional international matchups. The Miami Heat and Orlando Magic play in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Oct. 4 to kick off their preseason matchups. Two days later, the Denver Nuggets and Toronto Raptors will play a game in Vancouver. And finally, the Phoenix Suns and Brooklyn Nets will play a pair of games in Venetian Arena in Macao, China to finish off the preseason international slate.
