San Antonio Spurs draft pick Juan Núñez will undergo surgery to address an inflammatory reaction in his right knee, his club, Barcelona, announced this week.
Núñez previously underwent surgery to repair a season-ending meniscus tear in March. His rehabilitation had not progressed as expected, leading to a second surgery set to be performed next week at the Hospital de Barcelona under the care of Dr. Joan Carles Monllau.
The 21-year-old averaged five points, 3.3 assists and 2.7 rebounds on 41.8% shooting from the field in 47 games last season with Barcelona. He scored in double figures six times, including a season-high 19 points, three rebounds and three assists on Dec. 3.
Núñez played the first three years as a professional with Real Madrid, splitting time between the first and second divisions. He played the next two seasons with Ratiopharm Ulm in Germany, playing in 118 games across all league competitions.
The 6-foot-4 guard was the 36th overall pick in the 2024 NBA draft by the Spurs. He spent time with the Spanish national team last summer, making two appearances in the Olympic qualifying tournament before being replaced on the 12-man roster by Álex Abrines.
After suffering a setback in his recovery from knee surgery, Núñez will undergo another procedure. The team is expected to announce the completion of the surgery and a possible return-to-play timeline.
