The Boston Celtics might not be the biggest contenders for the 2025-26 season, but the franchise is focused on winning. The team’s owner thinks so, which is a good sign for the team’s long-term future.
As the team with the most NBA championships at 17, the Boston Celtics have a historical pedigree. Every player, front office member, and owner who joins the team must meet extremely high standards for success.
Over the past few seasons, Boston has lived up to those standards, reaching the NBA Finals twice in 2022 and 2024. They won the championship in 2024, the franchise’s 17th title, surpassing their fierce rivals, the Los Angeles Lakers, who had 16.
In May 2025, the Celtics franchise was sold to private equity investor William Chisholm for a whopping $6.1 billion. With that massive move, Chisholm is under the spotlight. Thankfully for Celtics fans, the new owner has the right mindset.

As the owner of the Celtics, Chisholm has to live up to some massive expectations. It is not immediate, considering most people agree the 2025-26 season won’t be a year of contention.
Tatum is not on the team due to his long-term Achilles injury. The team appreciates Tatum’s hard work during his recovery, but it will likely take him out for the 2025-26 season.
Despite that sentiment, Chisholm wants to keep helping the team because he wants the Celtics to succeed. He is not only the owner, but he is also a lifelong fan of the Celtics. That is meaningful for the organization because he wants to make the best decisions to help the team succeed.
“My wife Kimberly and I have raised a family of diehard Celtics fans. We are so grateful to be part of this Celtics organization, the greatest sports franchise in the world and the greatest sports city in the world,” Chisholm said in a Celtics press conference.
“While this is a dream come true for me and my family, I also realize that with this opportunity comes a tremendous responsibility. My ownership group and I understand that it is in fact ‘different here’ and that we have a responsibility to protect and advance the legacy of the Boston Celtics.”
“I believe that we are up to this challenge, but realize that we’ll need to prove it day-in and day-out by our actions and with our commitment to excellence.”
Considering he is also working with Brad Stevens, the team’s president of basketball operations, the franchise is in good hands. It will be a tough year ahead because of Tatum’s injury, but the other players are ready to step up, including Brown, who is the Celtics’ deal leader without Tatum.
The Celtics have a bright future under Chisholm
Now that Chisholm is leading the team, he is focused on helping them reach the pinnacle of the NBA again. It will be challenging because other teams have stepped up, including the 2025 champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder.
“If I were Brad Stevens I would try my best to keep these two together… I would have my future with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown as the face of the Boston Celtics moving forward.”

With his comments in his presser, Chisholm is focused on helping the Celtics succeed. That is some good news for the Celtics fans, considering they are a premier franchise in the NBA. If they miss out, while other teams thrive, it will be a disservice to the Celtics’ history.
With Stevens leading the charge in the front office, the Celtics are in a good position to keep fighting in the championship race. It will be challenging, but with superstars like Tatum and Brown on the team, they already have a good head start.
