Unlike some NBA old-timers who criticize today’s game and the players who dominate it, Allen Iverson has taken a different approach, praising how the game has evolved and the superstars who are carrying the torch.
And one player whom the Answer is particularly fond of is Golden State Warriors megastar Stephen Curry.
In fact, Iverson has admitted on the record that he makes it a point to check out the NBA’s schedule and note when the Warriors are playing so he can find the time to watch Curry play.
Must-see TV
Standing barely 6 feet tall, Iverson was a rare superstar who dominated the game at his height. But as incredible as A.I. was, Curry is on another level. With his deep three-pointers, slick ball-handling, and deceptive speed, Steph has become not only a fan favorite but also a personal favorite of Iverson himself.
Who could forget the sight and sounds of Iverson celebrating with fellow legends Dwyane Wade and Reggie Miller during the broadcast of the 2022 All-Star Game when Curry went on one of his patented shooting sprees?
When asked about his thoughts regarding Curry, Iverson expressed his appreciation for the former Davidson superstar’s skill and talent.
“Craziest point in the game,” Iverson gushed. “Nobody in the game that you got to guard soon as he crosses half court.”
Curry has undoubtedly changed the dynamics of today’s game with his ability to launch and make three-pointers at a high rate the moment he gets within shooting range. Defenses once anchored themselves at the three-point line. Today, however, his extraordinary range demands attention the instant he crosses half-court.
What makes Curry special is not just his shooting. His top-notch ball-handling skills allow him to create space and make shots against defenses that aim to disrupt everything he does.
“You ain’t never seen anybody with a jumper like that. He got the best jumper in the world and he may have, between him and Kyrie… my s—t ain’t like these dudes,” Iverson declared.
Steph makes 3s look like layups
Iverson was an era-defining superstar who stupefied defenses with his blinding speed, finishing ability and toughness. However, for him to say his skill set was nowhere near Curry’s speaks to the latter’s transcendent ability.
In particular, A.I. is in awe of how easy Steph makes draining open three-pointers look.
“First of all, he the greatest shooter, I think, of all time. Stand still, three-pointer — it’s like a layup,” he said. “So you know what I mean, like a standstill three, but nobody contesting it? It’s just like a breakaway layup.”
Long retired from the game, Iverson still tries to stay up to date with what’s happening in the NBA. However, there’s no player he pays more attention to than Curry, calling his games “must-see.”
“Steph is must-see TV. Like I’m looking at the schedule every night like, ‘Golden State on?'” he expressed. “Then I’m watching, I don’t give a damn who they playing.”
It’s one thing for an NBA superstar to make fans out of average Joes; it’s another for Curry to make a bona fide basketball legend like Iverson take time out of his busy schedule to tune in. But that’s just the kind of impact Curry has had on the game, making even former players marvel at his remarkable shooting ability and overall talent.
