In the NBA, everybody is entitled to speak their minds with no holds barred, especially if you are a seven-time champion. That’s exactly what Robert Horry did when he wrote an apparently enlightening piece for The Players’ Tribune back in 2015.

In it, Horry openly debunked some of the most famous myths and narratives in NBA history. “Big Shot Bob” argued that even though many would disagree with him, at least he gave them a chance to see things from a better vantage point.

“The fact of the matter is, I see the game differently than the average NBA fan. Truthfully, I see the game differently than most NBA coaches. But I have won seven NBA titles, so just hear me out for a second and you might actually learn something different than the cliches you hear on TV,” Horry wrote.

What the truth is, according to Horry

In all fairness to Horry’s claim, he tackled an array of interesting subjects. For every notion, the retired wing shared his hot take on it, which he described as the truth.

As a player who has played for various championship teams, Horry’s insights could really spark some passionate discussions among NBA fans and perhaps even make them reconsider their thoughts on certain things about the game.

From players to coaches to the NBA as an organization, Horry had something intriguing to say, and it is up to the readers to decide whether they would believe him or not.

“Here are a few things I think: Brent Barry was one of the smartest players I ever played with in the NBA. Rudy Tomjanovich was the best coach I ever had, not Phil Jackson or Gregg Popovich. Kobe Bryant was the hardest working player I ever played with. The Triangle is just a fancy name for the same plays that 50 percent of the NBA runs. Dennis Rodman was a genius. Basketball is a ruthless business. Winners don’t take no shit,” he pointed out.

Horry needs to up his swag

Given Horry’s impressive championship resume and collection of game-winning shots, it’s hard not to wonder why he doesn’t seem to get the same respect as other NBA legends. It’s something that former Atlanta Hawks star Jeff Teague once talked about in his podcast.

For Teague, Horry is without a doubt a true legend in the sport. Ideally, his opinions on certain matters should be respected. However, Jeff reckoned that Robert lacked the charisma that other former players have, regardless of whether they had a legendary career or not.

“I ain’t gonna lie, nobody cares about his championships. His championships are valid; it’s just that his swag was trash. He wasn’t swaggy. I ain’t sayin’ he was lame,” Teague said on his ‘Club 520’ podcast. “Who you know more? Him or Ty Lue?”

Horry currently works as a commentator for the Los Angeles Lakers. That being said, fans could expect to hear more juicy remarks from “Big Shot Bob.”

To sum it all up, the fans and every NBA personality have the right to agree or counter Horry’s takes the same way the seven-time Champ is free to say whatever he wants. In the end, the only truth is that every past or existing narrative in the NBA was, is and will always be a subjective matter.
