CAMDEN, N.J. — The Philadelphia 76ers have not yet been able to see exactly what Trendon Watford can do as training camp begins as he has been limited by right hamstring tightness, but it doesn’t change the fact that he is a known player and can help the Sixers when he gets right.

Watford, a 4-year player, spent two seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers before spending the previous two with the Brooklyn Nets. Undrafted out of LSU, and standing at 6-foot-8, Watford is somebody who can give the Sixers a little bit of everything. He has the skill to be able to grab a rebound and immediately push the break, he can get into the paint, has a nice touch around the basket, and is an underrated playmaker. Those are skills the Sixers need.

“He is versatile, right?” said coach Nick Nurse at media day. “We like him. He’s a guy who can run the floor, sprint to the corner, and finish a layup or he can grab the rebound, bring it himself, get you into the offense. Great vision, right? He sees the floor. He draws defenders. He finds the right plays, and then he can score a bucket, too when you need him to. So, I’m glad he’s here. I’ve liked him for a while.”

Watford, of course, is a close friend of Tyrese Maxey so there is already an important connection for the new addition coming into a new environment. The fact that he can turn to Maxey–combined with what Maxey knowing what he brings to the table–is a big positive.

“Through the years, we talk all the time,” Maxey said of Watford. “So if I see something that’s funny, I can look at him and he’s going to laugh, too. Other than that, Trendon’s going to be good for us. I think he’s somebody that’s in that same age (range) as me where he’s like the bridge. We connect to the young guys and we connect to the older guys. It’s going to be good for our team. I think he’s a good personality, somebody that’s really going to fit in and be talented on the court, too. He fits a role that we needed.”

Another familiar face for Watford will be another newcomer in the form of Jabari Walker. The two played together with the Portland Trail Blazers and Walker described what Watford can brin to the Sixers.

“Just him being like a big guard,” Walker explained. “His pace, his physicality—never really rushed. I think that’s something I’d like to take from his game and just him as a person. Goofy, we’ve always connected, so I think we just have that connection here, and he’s somebody I can talk to.”

Nurse said the hope is that Watford will join the Sixers in practice while out in Abu Dhabi. He has only gotten some individual sessions done for the first two training camp days at the team’s facility in Camden. Either way, it sounds as if Watford will play a big role for Philadelphia in the coming season.
