Washington Wizards rookie Tre Johnson got on the court for his first practice on Tuesday, and the sixth pick in the 2025 NBA draft caught the attention of veteran CJ McCollum.

Johnson was the SEC Freshman of the Year last season at Texas, averaging 19.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 33 games on 39.7% shooting from 3-point range. He was the 10th player in program history to be honored as Freshman of the Year.

The 19-year-old impressed throughout the offseason after spending countless hours in the gym. He incorporated some of the Wizards’ sets and plays into his workouts, which seemingly enabled him to have a smooth start to training camp.

“I wouldn’t say anything threw me off guard,” Johnson said. “I kind of knew going into it, there would be a lot of defense. It was real competition toward the end. I kind of enjoyed that part, but I don’t think it was nothing I didn’t expect going into it.”

Johnson debuted with the Wizards in the NBA Summer League, averaging 19.5 points, three rebounds, 1.5 assists and one steal on 45.5% shooting from 3-point range in two appearances. He finished off his stay with a 21-point effort on July 13.

The 6-foot-5 guard was highly touted because of his dynamic scoring ability and potential to pull up from all over the court, traits that were on display in a small sample size in Las Vegas. He projects to have the chance to compete for rotation minutes in training camp.

Johnson is among several players the Wizards are building around, including Bub Carrington, Bilal Coulibaly, Kyshawn George, Will Riley and Alexandre Sarr, among others. McCollum believes Johnson has a bright future ahead.

“Tre is skilled,” McCollum said. “He can shoot the ball. He has got good size. He is a worker. He loves the game. He isn’t afraid, and that is what you want out of your rookies. There are going to be good nights and bad nights, and I think he has got a bright future.”
