Deandre Ayton is stepping into a new chapter of his NBA career with the Los Angeles Lakers after finalizing a buyout from the Portland Trail Blazers. Since his days with the Phoenix Suns, Ayton’s production had been on a gradual decline.
Reports surfaced that the Trail Blazers had grown increasingly frustrated with his approach and behavior, which played a major role in his departure from Portland.
Despite the concerns, the Lakers decided to take a chance on the former No. 1 overall pick. They offered him a two-year, $16.6 million deal. By doing so, the Lakers showed a clear sign of faith in Ayton.
During the Lakers’ media day, Ayton addressed his new beginning with a strong and confident message. He made it clear that this opportunity carries deep meaning for him and compared himself to a “wounded animal” eager to fight back.
“This is an opportunity I can say I’m truly not going to take for granted. It’s almost like a wounded animal. I feel all the tension, and I know where I’m at. I’ve been in the gym every day. Like I say, I’m somewhere where it counts now,” Ayton said.
“And I’m happy that everybody gets to see it. I’m happy where as a player, as myself, I get a chance to prove something big on a big stage,” he added.

While speaking to the reporters, Ayton shared a personal detail about a message he received from Luka Doncic shortly after joining the Lakers.
“More like just congrats and welcoming me. Not before I signed—just when it happened, and he heard the news. He was back home doing his thing,” Ayton said.
Last season with the Blazers, Ayton posted averages of 14.4 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 1.6 assists. While those numbers may not have been standout, Lakers fans remain hopeful that his presence in the paint will provide valuable support for the Lakers in the upcoming season.
