Phoenix Suns trade target Jonathan Kuminga is staying with the Golden State Warriors after agreeing to a two-year deal for $48.5 million.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported the news on Tuesday, Sept. 30, tweeting the Warriors have a team option “designed for the contract to be ripped up and renegotiated next summer.”

The Suns looked to trade for Kuminga during the summer as they were reportedly willing to deliver a four-year deal for $90 million, though league sources had informed The Arizona Republic the offer wasn’t that high.

Charania earlier reported the Suns offered Royce O’Neale and multiple second-round picks to the Warriors for Kuminga. Phoenix knew it was a long shot to land the talented 22-year-old forward, but were one of two known teams looking to land him in a trade. The Sacramento Kings were the other team.

Phoenix doesn’t have any tradable first-round picks in the next seven years and $23 million in dead money in the next five years. A little more than $19 million of that amount this season is from the Bradley Beal buyout.

Kuminga will turn 23 years old on Oct. 6. The seventh overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, Kuminga averaged 15.3 points in 47 games last season.

There was mutual interest between the Suns and Kuminga, who saw Phoenix as an opportunity to start and play a major role in its rebuild.
