With a new era of Auburn basketball underway, Wednesday afternoon was a chance for the players to showcase their abilities in front of NBA scouts.
It was the team’s annual pro day, a chance for scouts to watch the team practice before the season starts. Media was also allowed to watch and report on the practice as Auburn prepares for its first exhibition game in two weeks.
During pro day, the team did drills, half court scrimmaging and a full court scrimmage that included three four-minute periods and one six-minute period.
Here’s what we saw from the new-look Tigers.
Availability notes
— The entire team was present for Wednesday’s pro day, but freshman guard Simon Walker and JUCO transfer center Emeka Opurum did not participate.
— Walker is recovering from foot surgery and Opurum is dealing with a lower back injury according to head coach Steven Pearl.
— Tahaad Pettiford and Keyshawn Hall were both present after rumors swirled of them exploring options outside of Auburn. Pearl said both players told the team on Wednesday that they plan on staying.
— KeShawn Murphy was a full participant, but was wearing a large brace on his left knee. Pearl said this came from tweaking it in a workout a few weeks ago.
Other observations
— The teams for the scrimmage were Pettiford, Kevin Overton, Blake Muschalek, Sebastian Williams-Adams and KeShawn Murphy on the white team, and Kaden Magwood, Abdul Bashir, Elyjah Freeman, Hall and Filip Jovic on the blue team.
— The blue team won the scrimmage 51-44.
— For a freshman, Magwood’s confidence and shot making ability is impressive. It’s reminiscent of Pettiford last season.
— Magwood led all scorers in the full-court scrimmage, finishing with 15 points on 5-for-6 shooting from the field and 4-for-5 shooting from 3-point range.
— Williams-Adams is the most physically imposing player out of the freshmen. He looks every bit of the 6-foot-8, 230 pounds that he’s listed at, and his upper body strength helps him on both ends. He finished the scrimmage with 13 points and five rebounds.
— Freeman, a Division II transfer looks very capable of being a big contributor right away. His athleticism jumps out immediately, and he was consistent from 3-point range in the scrimmage. He finished with 12 points on 4-for-7 shooting from the field and 2-for-4 shooting from 3.
— Before he retired, Bruce Pearl predicted that Hall would lead the SEC in free throws attempted, and Wednesday made that prediction look reasonable. He was hard to stop in transition and attempted seven free throws. Hall also added 13 total points.
— This team will likely play with a lot more tempo this season than last, which has a lot to do with the smaller personnel and expected larger rotation.
— One thing that could be an issue for Auburn this season is defensive rebounding. The Tigers aren’t particularly big or deep in the paint.
— Jovic had some good moments getting to the basket and his footwork was impressive, but Pearl said he’s still adjusting to the different style and level of athleticism here compared to in Europe.
— Bashir only had four points during the scrimmage, but flashed some deep range during a half court drill.
