SPOKANE, Wash. — Grand Canyon transfer Tyon Grant-Foster has been granted a practice waiver, allowing him to join Gonzaga and start practicing with the team while awaiting the NCAA’s decision on whether he will receive an additional year of eligibility, according to Jim Meehan at The Spokesman-Review.
Grant-Foster originally committed to Mark Few and the Zags in May, when he submitted his competitive eligibility waiver. He must have the waiver approved by the NCAA to suit up for Gonzaga in 2025-26.
Theo Lawson of The Spokesman-Review also reported that Grant-Foster has spent the offseason splitting time between his hometown of Kansas City and Phoenix, but is expected to head to Spokane soon to join the team. It remains unclear whether he will play or even attend Gonzaga’s annual Kraziness in the Kennel event, scheduled for Saturday at 4 p.m.
The 25-year-old guard is coming off two seasons at Grand Canyon, where he averaged 20.1 points per game in 2023-24, leading both the Lopes and the Western Athletic Conference. That year, he was named WAC Player of the Year and WAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player after guiding GCU to a conference tournament title and its first NCAA Tournament win — a March Madness victory over Saint Mary’s at the Spokane Arena.
Grant-Foster tested the NBA Draft process following that breakout season, earning an invitation to the combine before announcing his return to GCU in June 2024. This past season, however, his production dipped as he battled injuries. He averaged 14.8 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists while shooting 39.9% from the field and 23.2% from 3-point range in 26 games.
His path to this point has been marked by setbacks and is the reason for his waiver request. In the 2021-22 season opener at DePaul, Grant-Foster collapsed at halftime and was rushed to the hospital, where doctors had to shock his heart back into rhythm three times. He underwent two heart surgeries and was told he would never play basketball again.
After 16 months away from the game, he returned in Grand Canyon’s 2023-24 season opener, capping a remarkable comeback. He finished that season ranked 19th nationally in total points (684) and ninth in free throws made (210).
Before Grand Canyon, the Kansas City native played at Kansas in 2020-21, averaging 3.1 points and 2.2 rebounds in 8.2 minutes across 22 games. He began his college career at Indian Hills Community College, where he was an NJCAA All-America honorable mention after averaging 16.5 points and 6.5 rebounds from 2018 to 2020.
Gonzaga’s Kraziness in the Kennel is set for Saturday at 4 p.m. The scrimmage will stream live on SWXLocalSports.com and air tape-delayed at 7:30 p.m. on SWX.
