MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Grizzlies, along with FedEx, announced the first in a new series of renovated basketball courts across the city, the “Memphis Grizzlies Dream Court.”
“The Dream Court series is a manifestation of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s enduring vision of equality, unity and community empowerment,” the Grizzlies said in a statement. “A transformative court renovation program, the Dream Court Series is designed to refurbish numerous basketball courts throughout communities in Memphis and Shelby County into vibrant spaces for connection and community growth.”
The Grizzlies said the goal of the Dream Courts will be to provide safe enjoyable spaces for children, parents, and neighbors to come together, serving as “hubs of activity, creativity and collaboration, empowering communities to dream bigger and strive for greatness both on and off the court.”
The inaugural court renovation will be at Bernal E. Smith Boys & Girls Club at 4299 Ross Road. The project will include a renovated court, fresh paint, new lighting, updated locker rooms, new graphics, a new scorer’s table, and more–all designed to “transform the entire gymnasium into a vibrant space where young people can build confidence, develop skills and foster friendships.”
Memphis artist Jamond Bullock helped with the crafting of the first court, which the Grizzlies said is dedicated to the families of the Bernal E. Smith club.
The Grizzlies said applications for organizations or schools to receive a new or renovated court will open on Thursday, October 9.
