The Jonathan Kuminga contract standoff resolved earlier this week, with team and player coming to terms that they could both live with.

After finally agreeing to a new contract, Jonathan Kuminga is back practicing with his Golden State Warriors teammates.

Steve Kerr told reporters that Kuminga took part in half the team’s scrimmages, as he eased his way back in.

There is a new change for Kuminga too. Anthony Slater reports that Kuminga has changed his jersey number from 00, to 1.

Jonathan Kuminga switching jerseys from number 00 to 1 prompted plenty of reaction from NBA fans, who are puzzled by the decision.

“Fitting, he’s number 1 in his own mind,” wrote one fan, in reference to Kuminga’s long contract standoff.

Another fan posted a viral image of a man with two near identical images, with a toothpick in the second picture to change it up.

In reference to his number 1 jersey, one Warriors fan quipped: “That’s the amount of games he will be playing with us.”

That was in reference to purported ongoing tension with Steve Kerr, and speculation he could still be traded after agreeing his contract, later this season when he becomes eligible.

“One year of misery before he ask to be traded,” another fan wrote, making a similar point.

Other opinions were split, with one fan writing: “I rock with it double 0 didn’t fit him,” while another posted: “00 looked so much better”.

Jonathan Kuminga speaks out

Jonathan Kuminga met the media for the first time since agreeing his contract, and he was asked if he wants to stay with the Warriors long-term.

Kuminga gave a positive response, pointing out: “I’m here now… That’s my goal and that’s what I want to accomplish is being here for longer.”

Quizzed about the reason for his jersey number change, Kuminga responded: “Just a new start.”

The question remains over whether Kuminga belongs in Golden State’s best starting five, but with an aging team, there will be plenty of minutes to go around.

New signing Al Horford did not play in any back-to-backs for the Celtics, and that may not change with the Warriors.
