At this point, getting a pair of the SHAI 001 shoes must feel like hitting the jackpot. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s signature shoe has been a hit, to say the least. Lines at stores and online have been backed up all the way that most folks can’t bring some home.

The SHAI 001 has released four colorways to the public over the last few weeks — Butter, Charm Black, Hail Clay and Masi Blue. Gilgeous-Alexander had the daring idea to debut several of them with each playoff series win. His bet paid off as the Oklahoma City Thunder captured an NBA championship.

As the Thunder continue training camp, Gilgeous-Alexander talked about the support his Converse signature shoe has received since fans were allowed to purchase it. That type of success comes from his on-court dominance as he brought home an MVP, NBA Finals MVP and a championship ring this past season.

“It’s amazing. I have my signature shoe. To create it and make it is so fun and cool and an experience in itself,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “But to have the rest of the world and people love it as much as I do is really special.”

When Converse handed Gilgeous-Alexander the keys to their car, he took the creative freedom seriously. He wanted to do his best to show off his personality on the pair of shoes. Safe to say he’s done so, as one of the standout features is how unique they are.

Then, at his training camp media scrum, Gilgeous-Alexander utilized the last question about his shoes to turn into a salesman, ala Don Draper from ‘Mad Men.’ He gently placed his hand on a reporter’s shoulder before he told him with a wink that even the average NBA fan can enjoy his shoes.

“My strategy of being able to wear the shoe off the court has really helped. All you guys here don’t play basketball at the level I do,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “So you guys being able to wear it not playing basketball gives you a reason to go buy it. So go buy it.”
