Recently, the Los Angeles Lakers signed head coach JJ Redick to a contract extension that will take him through the 2029-30 season. The deal will reportedly pay Redick $45 million through its duration, per ESPN’s Shams Charania, and reaffirms the team’s commitment to him despite Los Angeles’ early playoff exit against the Minnesota Timberwolves last year.

Redick became known for his no-nonsense style of coaching during his first year at the helm for the Lakers, unafraid to coach star players like LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Luka Doncic the same way that he does everyone else.

One player who has been chewed out by Redick his fair share of times is Lakers guard Austin Reaves, who had a career year during the 2024-25 season. Recently, Reaves stopped by the “Young Man and the Three” podcast to recall a certain instance in which his own family threatened to intervene due to Redick’s harsh coaching style.

“We’ve had a couple of instances of where we’ve went at each other,” said Reaves, per TheYoungManAndTheThree on X. “My grandma one day was so mad at him. She was like, ‘If he yells at you like that one more time.’ I was like, ‘Mamaw, it’s OK. Your daughter has yelled at me way worse than that.'”

Redick had a mixed bag of a first season as the Lakers’ head coach. While he did help Los Angeles secure homecourt advantage in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs the first time since 2020, he also showed an inability to make adjustments during the team’s first round loss to Minnesota. Redick in particular drew heavy criticism for playing his starting lineup for the entire second half in Game 4 of that series, with his team clearly fading down the stretch due to a lack of rest.

Still, Rob Pelinka and company clearly liked what they saw enough to want to keep Redick around for several more years.

The Lakers will kick off their new season on Oct. 21 at home against the Golden State Warriors.
