The Oklahoma City Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is one of five NBA players to star in the new season of Netflix documentary “Starting 5.”

Netflix is known for a variety of sports documentaries, including Formula One’s “Drive to Survive,” the NFL’s “Quarterback,” and most recently “Any Given Night,” covering the last season of SEC football. One of the streaming company’s first hits in the category was “The Last Dance,” based on Michael Jordan’s career.

The first season of “Starting 5” starred LeBron James, Jimmy Butler, Anthony Edwards, Domantas Sabonis and Jayson Tatum.

In Season 2, the series will feature SGA, alongside Tyrese Haliburton, Jaylen Brown, Kevin Durant and James Harden. All eight episodes of the second season of “Starting 5” will be released on Oct. 16.

Here’s what we know about the upcoming docuseries:

The series dives into on and off-court moments

Starting 5 will provide fans with an insight into the 2024-25 NBA season, from the first week to the finals.

In addition to a dive into the locker room and exclusive interviews, the series will follow the players as they live their lives at home, with friends and family.

“Changing of the guard”

The name of episode six is fitting when looking at the lineup. For years, Kevin Durant and James Harden were two of the biggest names in the NBA, and both played for the Thunder in the team’s initial seasons. While they are still huge competitors in the league, the three other men in this season are younger, from a newer generation of the NBA elite.

Durant struggled this season with the Phoenix Suns during his 17th year in the league. Harden, on the other hand, went through ups and downs in his second year with the Clippers, after being traded from local rivals the Los Angeles Lakers.

Haliburton’s injury

One of the most devastating moments of the season was Tyrese Haliburton’s Achilles injury in Game 7 of the NBA Finals. The series will follow Haliburton and the Pacers and SGA and the Thunder to the finals, where the Thunder came out victorious.

Season premieres days before NBA season tip-off

The NBA pre-season starts this weekend, and the official 2025-26 season starts on Oct. 21, four days after the series’ release.

SGA and the Thunder are taking on Kevin Durant and his new team, the Houston Rockets at 6:30 p.m. CT.
