The Atlanta Hawks and Houston Rockets square off in the preseason tonight at Toyota Center in Houston.
Houston comes in after a busy offseason that featured the additions of 37-year-old Kevin Durant and Clint Capela in a blockbuster seven-team, 13-player deal that positions the Rockets as a top team in the West after a first-round loss to the Golden State Warriors.
The Rockets parted ways with rising star Jalen Green, but gained Durant — a 15-time All-Star and two-time NBA Finals MVP — who brings championship pedigree and scoring versatility to a young core that includes Alperen Sengun, Amen Thompson, and Jabari Smith Jr.
The Rockets will look to test chemistry and rotations early, especially given Fred VanVleet’s ACL injury, which removes one of their key perimeter creators from the picture.
For the Hawks, the game marks the debut of Kristaps Porzingis, acquired this summer from the Boston Celtics. Atlanta boasts a deep and balanced roster with Trae Young, Dyson Daniels, Jalen Johnson, Zaccharie Risacher, and Onyeka Okongwu — a lineup capable of surprising in the Eastern Conference.
