Tyrese Martin is entering his second season with the Brooklyn Nets. The 26-year-old suited up for Jordi Fernandez’s team on 60 occasions last season, averaging 8.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and two assists, shooting 40.6% from the field and 35.1% from deep. Now, the UCONN product will be looking to solidify his spot in Brooklyn’s rotation.

According to Michael Porter Jr., Martin has been impressive throughout the opening week of training camp. Brooklyn’s marquee summer addition recently told the media that Martin has been the most impressive member of the Nets’ roster since the team got back to work.

“Tyrese [Martin] has really been probably the most impressive player that I’ve seen on the team so far,” Porter Jr said. “I didn’t know a lot about him, but he’s been consistently killing through scrimmages, through open runs. He’s a player that can slide in that point guard spot but can also play the two. He can pass the ball. He’s been really impressive.”

Martin will likely continue to come off the bench in the upcoming season. He’s proven capable of sustaining a 20-minute per night role within Fernandez’s system, and should feel confident in his ability to push on and make a bigger impact in the upcoming season. The interesting part will be whether Martin’s role expands, shrinks or stays the same in the upcoming season.

After all, Fernandez will be re-evaluating the talent at his disposal and how to maximize that talent as the Nets continue to push forward with their rebuilding process. Martin is proving to be a shrewd addition by Brooklyn’s front office. Another strong season could put him in a strong position to negotiate a pay rise when his contract expires next summer, and in fairness, nobody could argue that he hasn’t earned it.
