Hall of Famer Allen Iverson revealed his top five NBA players of all time during an interview with CBS News on Tuesday, Oct. 7, to promote his new memoir, “Misunderstood,” released the same day.
When Iverson was asked for his top five, “The Answer” didn’t hesitate to name them, including a former short-term Phoenix Suns star who rounded out the list.
“Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Steph Curry, Shaquille O’Neal,” Iverson said.
O’Neal played 1 1/2 seasons for the Suns from 2008-09. He was traded to Phoenix from the Miami Heat, after he helped lead that franchise to its first title in 2006. After Phoenix, the legendary center was traded again in June 2009 to the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he joined forces with James for just one season.
As for Curry, Iverson said he’s “never seen anything like him before in my life.”
Iverson was the No. 1 overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers in 1996, the same year Bryant was selected No. 13 by the Charlotte Hornets. Bryant was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers on draft night.
Iverson, the 2001 league MVP, led Philadelphia to the Finals that season, his only trip to the Finals. The Lakers, led by Bryant and O’Neal, beat the 76ers for the second of the Lakers’ three-peat title run.
Now, Iverson (vice president) and O’Neal (president) are teammates in the boardroom for Reebok. They’re spearheading Reebok’s basketball comeback, targeting younger consumers to revitalize Iverson’s and O’Neal’s 1990s signature sneaker heyday. Iverson and O’Neal, representing Reebok, are featured in Netflix’s 2025 documentary series “Power Moves.”
Among other subjects Iverson covered during the CBS interview was his struggle with alcohol. He said being sober the past six months is “one of the best decisions that I ever made in my life.”
The trailer for Iverson’s three-part Amazon Prime documentary series “Iv3rson” was released Wednesday, Oct. 8, and is scheduled to begin airing on Oct. 23.
