OSHKOSH (WLUK) — A familiar face to basketball fans in Wisconsin is returning to his home state.
On Wednesday, the Wisconsin Herd — the Oshkosh-based NBA G League affiliate of the Milwaukee Bucks — announced they acquired returning player rights to Johnny Davis from the Westchester Knicks, the G League affiliate of the New York Knicks.
Davis, 23, is a La Crosse native who won Wisconsin’s coveted Mr. Basketball award his senior year at La Crosse Central High School.
He was a standout for Greg Gard and the Badgers from 2020-22, which includes his breakout sophomore season in which he earned First-Team All-Big Ten, Big Ten Player of the Year and First-Team All-American honors.
The Washington Wizards selected Davis 10th overall in the 2022 NBA Draft, but he struggled to find his footing and carve out a consistent role for himself on the team. During his nearly three full seasons with Washington, Davis bounced around between the Wizards and their G League affiliate, the Capital City Go-Go.
Davis was sent to the Memphis Grizzlies in February as part of a three-team deal ahead of the NBA trade deadline. After the Grizzlies waived Davis, he signed with the Westchester Knicks.
Now, after the trade between the Knicks and Herd, Davis is back home looking for a fresh start in the state that kickstarted his basketball career.
In exchange for returning player rights to Davis, the Herd gave up rights to Diego Bernard and Jalen Lewis, a first-round pick in the 2026 NBA G League Player Draft and a pick in the 2026 NBA G League International Draft.
