The Boston Celtics got their preseason schedule off to a good start with a 121-103 win over a short-handed Memphis Grizzlies roster. Joe Mazzulla went with a surprise starting five, handing starts to Xavier Tillman Sr., Chris Boucher and Sam Hauser as Payton Pritchard, Anfernee Simons and Neemias Queta watched on in street clothes.

Going small gave the Celtics an opportunity to pressure the perimeter, switch on screening actions and control the passing lanes. However, when Luka Garza checked into the game, Mazzulla’s defensive system reverted to a more familiar drop scheme with wings and guards pinching near the elbows to provide additional resistance to the drive.

Despite the personnel changes this summer, Boston still took more than 50% of their total shot attempts from three-point range, something which may need to change after it converted at a paltry 28.3% of their attempts from deep.

Among all of the changes happening in Boston, there are certainly questions as to how the rotation and overall schematics are going to look in the coming season. And with that in mind, Adam Taylor and Billy Calabrese tried their best to provide a fair analysis of Boston’s win over Memphis in the latest episode of “The Celtics Chronicle” podcast, where the duo recapped what we had witnessed in the opening game of preseason.
