Former Boston Celtics forward Paul Pierce has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol after he was found sleeping behind the wheel of his car on a Los Angeles highway, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) said.

The incident happened on Tuesday at around 10:30 pm when the CHP officers were responding to a car crash in the northbound lanes of Highway 101, near Lankershim Boulevard. During the investigation, the officers found a Range Rover SUV stopped in one of the southbound lanes, a short distance from the crash site.

According to police reports, Pierce was found asleep at the wheel. Officers noted signs of alcohol impairment and launched a DUI investigation, which led to his arrest. The case is now to be reviewed by the Los Angeles City Attorney.

Pierce, 51, spent 15 seasons with the Boston Celtics, winning an NBA championship and earning Finals MVP honours in 2008. He retired as one of the franchise’s most celebrated players.

Off the court, Pierce has faced controversy. In 2021, he was dismissed from his role as an NBA analyst with ESPN after an inappropriate live video broadcast appeared on his Instagram account, showing what was reported as a house party with exotic dancers.

Authorities have not released further details regarding Pierce’s condition at the time of the arrest or any subsequent legal proceedings.
