Philadelphia 76ers rookie VJ Edgecombe will not play on Friday at home against the Orlando Magic due to left hip soreness, according to Ky Carlin of Sixers Wire.
Edgecombe is considered day-to-day with the injury after he was held out of practice on Thursday. He participated in shootaround on Friday ahead of the matchup and is expected to return to practice next week, the team announced.
The third pick totaled 24 points, eight rebounds, eight assists, one steal and one blocked shot in the Sixers’ first two preseason games against the New York Knicks in Abu Dhabi. He committed only three turnovers across 55 minutes of action, while shooting 31.8% from the field.
Edgecombe was highly touted out of Baylor because of his ability to impact games on both ends of the court. He was viewed as one of the most athletic players in the draft and was an offensive force when getting downhill, thanks to his ability to create for himself and stretch the floor.
The 20-year-old has had an impressive training camp showing, earning praise from several teammates and coach Nick Nurse. The team likes the versatility Edgecombe brings to the court as a player who can play with or without the ball in the backcourt.
Edgecombe may be thrust into a larger role to begin the year with Jared McCain sidelined with a thumb injury. While he won’t play on Friday against the Magic, the Sixers are optimistic he’ll be good to go in their preseason finale on Oct. 17.
