PHILADELPHIA — The preseason continued on Friday for the Philadelphia 76ers with a 128-98 loss to the Orlando Magic. The Sixers were without the likes of Joel Embiid, Paul George, VJ Edgecombe, Quentin Grimes, and others as coach Nick Nurse got a good look at the rest of the roster.

Tyrese Maxey played only 12 minutes–the first 12 of the game–but had 17 points on 7-for-14 shooting while knocking down three triples. Kennedy Chandler had 16 points, five assists, and four steals, Kelly Oubre Jr. had 12 points and five rebounds, and Dominick Barlow added 12 points and nine rebounds.

Here are the three biggest takeaways after the loss to the Magic:

Barlow huge on the glass

Barlow was all over the place on Friday. Of the nine rebounds, three of them were on the offensive glass which creates extra possessions for Philadelphia and he used his athleticism to run the floor and allow the Sixers to play with the pace coach Nick Nurse is looking for. There is a possibility that he can earn himself a rotation spot—and probably a standard deal—ahead of opening night.

“I think he’s played really good,” Maxey said of Barlow. “I think he’s doing a lot of different things, though. Like, he’s playing the right way. He’s crashing, but he’s also, when he gets the ball and he’s in a position where he could drive, he’s swinging, going to set a screen, rolling, those are really big plays for him to make. Then on defense, he can guard a lot of different positions. He’s active. He’s wiry. He’s been doing a really good job in camp, and in the preseason games showing what he can do.”

Maxey dominates

Maxey only played 12 minutes against the Magic, but he was dominant in those 12 minutes. He used his blinding speed and quickness to get to the basket and find easy looks whether it was a floater, acrobatic layups, or stepping back for triples, this was a performance Nurse and the Sixers will certainly take as they move forward in the preseason. The exhibition schedule is all about getting ready for the regular season and Maxey was able to find a way to do so at a high level.

“I think, again, there was opportunities for him up the floor a little bit,” Nurse said of Maxey. “It’s good to see the transition 3. There was some good driving lanes for him. There was some space out there. I thought he looked pretty smooth and took the opportunities that were there, and kind of got going. I thought he looked great in the first quarter.”

Edwards struggles again

Edwards once again had some shooting struggles. He shot just 2-for-8 and 1-for-4 from deep in this one. The Sixers believe he can make an impact—he knows he can make an impact—and he had some good moments on Friday with his five assists and some good defensive plays, but he needs to figure out the shooting issues and knock down those open looks. The Sixers have created some open looks for him and he has to be able to knock them down. As he prepares for his second season, he will be a guy the Sixers will look to in order to receive big minutes in the rotation, but he can’t continue to shoot like this. Again, the assists are helpful, but he needs to be better.

“I thought he got off to a really solid start,” Nurse said. “It got a little rough for him out there. Again, a couple few turnovers and that, but it was good to see him hit a 3-ball, fairly deep. Another one go in and out. He made the right plays early, right? And again, I think he’s, as we talked about before the game, he’s a guy that kind of needs to play a role of letting things come to him. I think he’s still growing into when he needs to make plays and create for others. It’s so much more of a playing around a lot better players, a lot better scores, I think, that’s is the role we want him to grow into.”
