Dallas Mavericks guard D’Angelo Russell has experienced plenty of highs and lows over his 10-year NBA career, and now he’s looking for a fresh start.
Most recently, with the Brooklyn Nets, he averaged 12.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game, shooting 39.0% from the field.
However, NBA analyst Bill Simmons of The Ringer offered a humorous comparison when describing Russell’s career impact.
“He’s your buddy that comes to visit, and it’s really great when he’s only there for one day. But by day six, you’re like, ‘Ah, I’m ready for him to leave.’ That’s D-Lo,” Simmons said on his latest podcast episode.
He continued: “D-Lo would be great for one day, which in this case will be two months of his first season with the Mavericks. They’ll go through all the stages of D-Lo — they’ll say, ‘Wow, what a steal! My God, D-Lo dropped 35 tonight, he’s amazing!’ They won’t even have to worry about the playoff version because Kyrie will be back by then.”
At 29 years old, Russell is still searching for a long-term NBA home. Drafted second overall in 2015, he began his career with a rebuilding Los Angeles Lakers team that lacked direction.
After just two seasons, he was traded to the Brooklyn Nets, where he earned his first and only All-Star selection.
In the years that followed, Russell’s career became something of a journey — with stops at the Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, and a return to the Lakers in 2022 — before landing with the Dallas Mavericks.
