The Magic won their second preseason game Friday night by 30 points against the 76ers but the performance was far from perfect.
Orlando turned the ball over 20 times for 26 Philadelphia points and allowed 60 points in the paint during the 128-98 road victory.
Still, there was plenty for Magic coach Jamahl Mosley to like from the exhibition, including the fact that his team shot 37 of 42 (88.1%) at the free throw line.
“Getting everybody out of here healthy was a big priority,” Mosley said. “We need to a better job taking care of the ball. The effort was there. We’ve just got to clean up some of the spacing pieces.”
The team’s next tune-up for the regular season takes place Sunday when the Magic host the Heat at Kia Center. Orlando then wraps up the preseason at home Thursday against New Orleans.
Before Orlando flips the page on Friday’s road contest, here’s what stood out from the win at Xfinity Mobile Arena:
Wendell’s way
Magic center Wendell Carter Jr. spoke at media day about how helpful a healthy summer would be for him, and so far that’s proven to be true this preseason.
The 6-foot-10 big recorded a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds in just 21 minutes against the Sixers. Besides adding 3 assists, Carter had success hitting shots from the midrange and finishing around the rim.
“He’s a relentless worker,” Magic forward Tristan da Silva said. “So I’m not surprised. I’m happy for him having a performance like that. I feel like a lot of the stuff he does goes unnoticed just because it’s not on the stat sheet.
“But the type of gravity that he has and the plays that he makes off the ball, kind of the ‘team sacrifice’ plays that he does, it’s nice to see him pop off like that,” da Silva added.
Rookie impact
Jase Richardson once again shined on the offensive end.
The No. 25 pick made all 3 of his shot attempts, which included a pair of triples. He added 4 rebounds and 2 assists in 19 minutes while helping Orlando space the floor.
Although Philadelphia targeted Richardson on the defensive end, Mosley said he believes the 6-foot guard did a good job holding his ground.
“He’s trying to guard as best as he can,” the Magic coach said. “He’s picking up full-court, changing the game there knowing that to get on the floor [he has] to defend and guard multiple positions.
“He’s definitely shown the toughness and the IQ to be able to do it,” Mosley added.
Da Silva’s aggression
The second-year pro continued to carry over his improved play from EuroBasket to the Magic against the Sixers.
Da Silva finished off one drive in transition with a running dunk in the first quarter and later converted two quick 3s in the third. He ended with 12 points in 13 minutes.
“Well, I love it,” Mosley said. “Our bench celebrates that because that’s we’re asking him to do: be aggressive, take the shots when you’re open and just look to keep making plays for your teammates.”
Magic raise awareness
The Magic are partnering with AdventHealth for the seventh time to raise breast cancer awareness by hosting “Pink in the Paint Night” on Sunday. Orlando is encouraging fans to wear pink to the game when the franchise donates game tickets to local breast cancer survivors and to raise funds throughout the night that will benefit AdventHealth Foundation’s Breast Care Fund.
Teleties, a hair tie company, will donate breast cancer awareness Teleties packs to 10,000 fans as they leave the building. The first 5,000 fans will also receive rally towels courtesy of AdventHealth and Teleties.
During the game, Teleties will present a check at halftime for $15,000 to AdventHealth Foundation’s Breast Care Fund and will also donate $250 for every point scored in the fourth quarter of the game to the nonprofit organization.
Magic guard Tyus Jones is also meeting survivors pre-game. His mother, Debbie, is a survivor. Tyus and his brother Tre have actively supported breast cancer awareness through the NBA since their mother’s diagnosis in 2019.
