Golden State Warriors General Manager Mike Dunleavy appeared live on the ‘95.7 The Game’ radio broadcast to discuss some essential team topics before the 2025-26 NBA season begins.
Throughout the offseason, the Warriors focused on keeping a hold of their Congolese star, Jonathan Kuminga. The situation settled after he agreed to a two-year contract extension on September 30.
Now, the Warriors fans have other questions regarding the team, one of the most important of which is the future of head coach Steve Kerr. Dunleavy carefully structured his words and answered the question elaborately on the show.
What Did Mike Dunleavy Say About Steve Kerr’s Future With the Team?
In a straightforward response to the question on Kerr’s future in the Bay Area, Dunleavy said, “Yeah, I mean, I guess technically there is. I wouldn’t really classify it as that. I mean, this isn’t like a regular situation with the head coach, where he’s in the last year of his deal, and it’s maybe a lame duck situation. We know what it is with Steve.”
He added, “He’s been here a long time. He’s been an amazing part of this franchise, and as far as I’m concerned, he can stay as long as he wants. We’re going to give him the grace of the season and to get through it or to go through some of it to just kind of feel and see where he’s at mentally, physically, and all. It’s a huge thing.”
Dunleavy concluded, “I get how it doesn’t maybe line up, but it’s hard to see Steve moving on or to see Steph finishing his career without Steve on the sidelines. So I think it’ll all work out, but we’re not going to jump into anything. We’re going to go on Steve’s terms and right now he just kind of I think wants to take it and see how the season goes and no problem on our end.”
Kerr has been the Warriors’ head coach since 2014. The man is enriched with silverware both as a player and a coach. While as a player he won three NBA Championships with the Bulls and two with the Spurs, he has led the Warriors to four NBA championships as the head coach, making them one of the most potent sides of the previous decade.
But since 2020, Kerr’s Warriors side has only won one NBA title, which came in 2022. Three years since then, they have been knocked out in the conference semifinals twice, while once they failed to even qualify for the playoffs.
This team contends for silverware, and their recent results have the fans and the basketball fraternity questioning the future of head coach Kerr. Whatever happens between Steve and the Warriors next season remains to be seen. For now, Kerr’s position with the team remains as that of a head coach heading into the 2025-26 NBA season.
