The city of Glendale, along with the Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury Foundation, celebrated the dedication of Al McCoy Memorial Park and SHAZAM!. The park, located near North 51st and West Olive Avenues, honors the late Suns broadcaster in the neighborhood he called home for more than 50 years.
The Phoenix Suns Gorilla and dancers joined McCoy’s sons and grandchildren for the ceremony. Glendale’s Copper Canyon High School band, spirit line, pom team, boys’ and girls’ basketball teams, and mascot also participated in unveiling the new court.
“Al McCoy Memorial Park and SHAZAM! Court will be enjoyed by people of all ages, and we are honored to continue his legacy in this special way,” Glendale City Manager Kevin Phelps said.
Phoenix Suns color analyst and former player Eddie Johnson, former Glendale City Councilmember Ian Hugh and McCoy’s son Jerry also attended the celebration.
“Anyone who knows about the Phoenix Suns knows Al,” Johnson said. “To carry on Al’s legacy through a basketball court in the neighborhood he loved so much — it doesn’t get any better. I thanked Al every day I was next to him for how professional he was and, more importantly, for how much he loved Arizona and the Phoenix Suns.”
Known for his signature calls — “Shazam!” and “Heartbreak Hotel” — McCoy was the voice of Suns basketball for five decades, calling games for 51 years before retiring in 2023. His legacy continues to resonate with fans across Arizona and beyond.
“By choice, he made Glendale his hometown for 50 years while calling games for the Suns,” Jerry McCoy said. “He loved bragging about downtown Glendale, its restaurants and shops, as well as the Arrowhead Ranch area and the mega events the city hosts.”
“We’re honored to work with our partners at the Phoenix Suns and Mercury Foundation to honor Al McCoy,” Phelps said. “This park and basketball court reflect the Foundation’s mission to use basketball to bring the community together.”
“How many people muted their TVs during Suns games so they could listen to Al on the radio?” Hugh asked the crowd. “He was a fantastic man with a great family, and he is surely missed.”
Al McCoy Memorial Park features the SHAZAM! Court, a new playground, upgraded sand volleyball court, LED lighting, improved irrigation and other amenities across its 8 acres.
