Cooper Flagg continues to demonstrate improvement throughout the preseason ahead of the new NBA season starting later this month.

Flagg has impressed consistently, with the number one pick earning praise from fans following his latest performance against the Charlotte Hornets.

Flagg showcased two-way capabilities by producing 11 points, four assists, and three steals, despite the Mavericks’ 120-116 defeat.

NBA analysts, such as Bill Simmons, already believe that Flagg will help the Mavs achieve more than 40 wins next season.

After the Hornets game, teammate Dereck Lively II shared his perspective on the rookie, noting Flagg’s development in specific aspects since joining the Mavericks.

“His vision, his ability to see the floor. No matter if he’s running down a fast break, he’s able to make plays,” Lively explained.

“But also when we’re in the half court, when there’s the clock running, he’s able to make either the right pass, the right shot, or he’s just doing it with aggressiveness, and that’s what we need out there.”

Lively emphasized how Flagg’s decision-making has evolved in both transition and structured offensive sets.

The rookie’s ability to read situations and make appropriate choices demonstrates maturity beyond typical first-year players.

Personally, Lively feels Flagg’s presence has significantly impacted both his individual game and the team’s overall defensive scheme.

Flagg possesses the physical attributes and skills to defend both centers and forwards, providing valuable coverage.

“He’s aggressive. No matter if he’s making mistakes, no matter if he’s doing the right things, he’s always out there trying to make his teammates better, trying to make the right play,” Lively stated.

“I’m glad I have him backing me up. If I’m stepping over to contest, knowing that he’s behind me on that backside is definitely just making my job easier, which makes his job easier.”

Flagg thrives with ball-handling responsibilities and can defend multiple positions effectively, suggesting genuine two-way potential.

If he continues to elevate his performance and meets expectations during the regular season, the Mavericks may have found their franchise cornerstone for the post-Luka Doncic era.
