The Brooklyn Nets (2-1) did not get the result they wanted on Friday when they faced the Phoenix Suns (2-1) on Friday for the first of two preseason games as part of the NBA China Games in Macao. However, Brooklyn was able to do what they needed to do to get back into Sunday’s rematch against Phoenix and they were rewarded with a narrow win over a tough opponent.
The Nets beat the Suns 111-109 despite trailing by as many as 15 points in the contest thanks to the contributions of players like guard Cam Thomas and forward Michael Porter Jr. Thomas dropped 16 points and four rebounds while Porter put up 15 points and four rebounds of his own as Brooklyn held on for their second win of the preseason with head coach Jordi Fernandez leading the way.
At first, the Nets struggled to hold down Suns guard Devin Booker, but once the second half came around, Brooklyn tightened up its defense of Booker, forcing other Phoenix players to beat them. With that being said, here are three takeaways from Sunday’s preseason win over the Suns:
Michael Porter Jr. Is As Steady As They Come
Porter came away from Sunday’s with a solid 15-point performance and while he didn’t have a blow-up kind of game thus far, he has shown that he will be effective in any given game. Across three games against two different opponents, Porter has shot at least 50.0% from the field and 40.0% from three-point land in each of those games and then most he has played in any of the three games is 24 minutes.
Ben Saraf Could Be Separating Himself In Point Guard Conversation
Through three games of the preseason, Nets head coach Jordi Fernandez has been evaluating the two rookie point guards that he has available in Nolan Traore and Ben Saraf. With Traore starting for the second straight time while the team has been in Macao, it seemed that he had gained an edge over Saraf.
However, Saraf may have swung the pendulum back in his favor with an exciting outing of four points, four rebounds, and 11 assists to just three turnovers. Saraf played five more minutes (22) than Traore did (17), but with Traore turning in four points, three assists, and four turnovers, Saraf may have the leg up on him in the competition.
Ziaire Williams Could Be Poised For Another Big Year
Williams returned to the Nets this offseason after re-signing on a two-year, $12.5 million deal, but he came back to a team with plenty of depth on the wings with players like Michael Porter Jr. and Terance Mann. However, Williams showed on Sunday that he has not only adapted to what Brooklyn wants from him, but he could be poised to provide more production if his 15-point, four-rebound performance is any indication of what’s to come.
