The Orlando Magic kicked off the offseason with a bang, acquiring Desmond Bane from the Memphis Grizzlies. With the Eastern Conference appearing weaker this year, the team has decided to push its chips in, adding one of the league’s premier sharpshooters.
Orlando continues to build around emerging star Paolo Banchero, who enters his fourth NBA season. Banchero burst onto the scene by winning Rookie of the Year in 2023 after being selected first overall by the Magic in the 2022 NBA Draft out of Duke. The 22-year-old power forward has developed into a legitimate offensive weapon and playmaker while holding his own defensively.

He appeared in just 46 games last season due to a torn right oblique but delivered when healthy, averaging 34.4 minutes, 25.9 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.

As the Magic prepare for their regular season opener on Wednesday, Oct. 22 against the Miami Heat, the team has been active in preseason play. Banchero participated in the first two games and logged 23 minutes on Friday against the Philadelphia 76ers, finishing with 13 points, four rebounds and two assists.

Ahead of the team’s third preseason matchup against the Heat, Magic coach Jamahl Mosley announced that both Banchero and Bane would sit out for rest. Mosley explained the decision was part of an effort to experiment with different lineup combinations during the preseason, according to Jason Beede of the Orlando Sentinel.
With Bane now in the mix and Banchero continuing to evolve, Orlando’s roster looks deeper and more balanced than it has in years. The front office has prioritized shooting and lineup flexibility, surrounding Banchero with complementary pieces who can space the floor and defend.

The addition of Bane gives the Magic a proven scorer who can take pressure off Banchero in late-game situations. If the core continues to develop and stay healthy, Orlando could be one of the league’s biggest surprises. For the first time in a decade, the Magic are being talked about as legitimate contenders.
