Dallas Mavericks Emphasizing Rebounding, Defensive Consistency

The Mavericks’ loss to Charlotte revealed one area Jason Kidd plans to address before opening night — rebounding. Dallas was outrebounded 54–37, including a 15–5 margin on the offensive glass, in what Kidd called a point of emphasis moving forward.

“We have to rebound,” Kidd said. “They’re like Boston — they’re trying to shoot a lot of threes. You’ve got to be able to rebound the ball. If you give them second opportunities in this league, even though it’s preseason, you’re going to get hurt.”

Dereck Lively II echoed that message, noting that discipline and communication must improve defensively.

“We’ve got to be solid, we’ve got to be disciplined in the rotations and disciplined on the ball,” Lively said. “It’s really just us not watching the ball, just sticking to our fundamentals.”

With Lively and Anthony Davis expected to anchor the frontcourt, Dallas aims to establish itself as one of the league’s top rebounding teams. Kidd indicated the focus during the next two games will be correcting those habits while continuing to evaluate roster combinations.

Cooper Flagg’s Development Continues

Rookie wing Cooper Flagg once again flashed two-way potential against the Hornets, finishing with 11 points, four assists, three steals, and three rebounds in 24 minutes. He also committed five turnovers — a reflection of the growing pains Kidd encourages him to play through.

“Oh, it was good — another good night on both ends,” Kidd said. “He made plays for his teammates, was able to knock down shots, and defensively came up with some big plays.”

Flagg said he’s using preseason to test different reads and find better synergy alongside Davis.

“It’s huge,” Flagg said. “It’s a different level, different spacing. I’ve got to find more ways to help AD — play off him better when he’s posting up or getting ISOs. That’s what preseason is for — learning how to fit together.”

Rotation Outlook

Dallas has given its starters extended minutes through the first two preseason games, with Kidd noting players reached 24–28 minutes on Saturday. P.J. Washington has made an impact off the bench, averaging 13 points with a team-best +30 plus-minus.

The Mavericks still have one open two-way contract spot, with Miles Kelly and Ryan Nembhard occupying the other two. Fringe roster players such as Moussa Cisse, Jeremiah Robinson-Earl, Delano Banton, and Dennis Smith Jr. will continue competing for roster consideration.

Kidd may opt to rest regulars ahead of Wednesday’s preseason finale in Las Vegas against the Lakers and former Maverick Luka Dončić.

Scouting the Utah Jazz

Utah’s rebuild is centered around All-Star Lauri Markkanen, who has yet to appear this preseason due to a wrist injury. Rookies Ace Bailey (20 points, seven rebounds) and Walter Clayton (20 points, five rebounds, five assists) impressed in Friday’s overtime loss to San Antonio, while third-year forward Brice Sensabaugh led the team with 26 points.

With a youthful roster and Markkanen’s uncertain status, the Jazz will again rely on development minutes for their young core as they continue preseason play.

What’s Next

Following Monday’s matchup, the Mavericks will head to Las Vegas to face the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday in their preseason finale before opening the regular season against the San Antonio Spurs on Oct. 22.
