Kendrick Perkins makes his thoughts clear on which player the San Antonio Spurs should draft.

After being stuck in mediocrity for years, the San Antonio Spurs have been blessed with incredible luck over the last three years.

The organization drafted Victor Wembanyama using the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. They followed it up with selecting Stephon Castle in the 2024 NBA Draft.

Both players have an incredible ceiling as they won back-to-back Rookie of the Year awards. The Spurs’ luck continues to bless them as they have now landed the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

While Duke’s Cooper Flagg is viewed as the consensus No. 1 pick in this draft, there are plenty of other players in the class as well.

Many expect the Spurs to use their pick on Rutgers’ Dylan Harper. However, former NBA player Kendrick Perkins wants the team to select Tre Johnson, who he feels has a similar skill set to Khris Middleton.

“If the Spurs decide to keep their pick… Tre Johnson is their guy at Number 2. Fits well alongside Wemby and Castle! Tre reminds me a lot of Khris Middleton,” Perkins tweeted on X.

If what Perkins has claimed is true then Johnson could have a sensational ceiling. After all, Middleton was second-in-command to Giannis Antetokounmpo during the Milwaukee Bucks’ 2021 NBA Championship run.

The Spurs have another option

With the class of 2025 featuring a plethora of talented prospects, it aligns well with the Spurs building a young core around Wembanyama.

In that case, they could pick a talented young player who may take a couple of years to develop, but help the Spurs in the long term.

However, the other path that the Spurs could take is trading their No. 2 overall pick. Why? Well, they could land a superstar in the offseason and enter win-now mode with Wemby as the cornerstone player.

In this case, it would require parting ways with De’Aaron Fox as he is likely the most tradeable player on the roster right now. Either way, the Spurs are in an excellent position and will likely end their playoff drought next season.
