Former L.A. Clippers guard Patrick Beverley drew criticism for claiming that the Las Vegas Aces would beat an NBA team.
Beverley tweeted his claim after the Acers defeated the Phoenix Mercury in the recently concluded 2025 WNBA Finals. However, the internet was quick to roast Pat Bev because it’s nothing short of impossible to believe that women can beat taller and stronger men in a physical sport like basketball, where height is still might.
Just imagine the Aces’ best player, 6’4″ A’ja Wilson, guarded by NBA bigs like 7’5″ Victor Wembanyama or 7’1″ Chet Holmgren.
Even Rone did not believe that Pat Bev really tweeted that
The tweet sounded so ridiculous that even Beverley’s podcast co-host, Adam Ferrone, admitted on the recent episode of “The Pat Bev Podcast” that he thought it was fake news or something produced by AI.
Beverley, however, owned up to the controversial social media post, saying he wrote it while watching the Aces dominate and sweep the Phoenix Mercury in Game 4 of the WNBA Finals.
“I’m having my way, I look up, I’m watching the game anyway. I leave early cuz I know the Aces gonna win. I got a bottle of wine, grab my phone, and I go “You know what, I’m looking at this team, I’m looking at Becky Hammon, I’m looking at A’ja Wilson, and I’m looking at the way they won the game and I’m like “I think they can beat an NBA team. And when I said that, I mean an NBA team but obviously not the starters. I mean like bench players 6,7,8,9,10. For sure!” explained Beverley.
Height matters
The show’s producer, Jordan Pettway, told the former NBA player that even if we’re not considering it a game between women and men and just think of two men’s teams and one team has a significant size advantage, it would be natural to expect that the taller and bigger team would win the game. If you include gender in the conversation, it’s going to be even more lopsided. But Pat Bev insisted on his argument.
“I’m not saying that they can beat the ‘Greek Freaks,” the Giannises and all that. But you give me some motherfu—rs of the bench in Washington, the Wizards. If you give me some motherfu—rs off the bench from the Hornets, I’ll put my money on them,” he added.
When Pettway told Beverley that the Wizards bench has a 6’6″ guard and 2025 No.6 overall pick, Tre Johnson, Pat Bev said he doesn’t care because he doesn’t know him.
When Jordan mentioned that Washington also has 6’10” Marvin Bagley III on their roster, Beverley responded by saying Bagley “has no knees.” And even when Rone said that Bagley would easily block A’ja’s shots, Pat Bev insisted on his argument.
Well, Beverley is stubborn. We saw this recently when he ridiculously argued with Trae Young about that All-Star thing. But sometimes, he makes valid arguments too. Not on this one, though. Because while the Aces may match the Wizards or Hornets bench in skill, the size and strength advantage would be too much to overcome.
And Rone was right. You can call Bagley whatever, but A’ja Wilson is not dominating him on the court. Just no way.
